about this site
This site was created in Plone, a open source content management system that runs on nearly every platform.
In its current form, this site is what I'd call a beta product. Not one that's buggy, which I don't believe it is, but more in the way that the content is still being developed, gathered and organized before being published. Additionally, I'm still becoming familiar with the software framework that I've chosen to run this site on, Plone. Plone is a ready-to-run, open source content
management system that is built on the Zope
application server which is the content management framework for the site. The underlying code for Zope/Plone is primarily Python.
In its present state, the hardware that this site is running on is a run of the mill, Linux kit I built about five years ago in a fun Alienware case, and slapped on a nice new version of CentOS. I used to run it on a borrowed (thanks Jeff!) Power Mac G4 Cube which is running OS X Server v.10.4. I'm actually pretty blown away that it's able to run Plone and serve up content as well and as quickly as it does.
The Plone/Zope/Python community as a whole is just great. I had the opportunity to meet lots of people from the Plone community at the 2006 Plone Conference. Since then, I haven't had much time to contribute to the Plone community in any kind of software development way but I was able to contribute by setting up the official LinkedIn Plone Group Professional Networking Group on LinkedIn. If you're a Ploner or would like to develop professional Plone connections you too can join the LinkedIn Plone group by clicking here.
